Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad Match Scorecard

In Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad Match Scorecard, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) played out an exhilarating contest here on Wednesday, but the bigger prize of a berth in the playoffs belonged to SRH this time around. The last time the two sides met was on May 18, 2026, in the 63rd Match of IPL 2026 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai with both teams looking to keep their post-season hopes alive.

Batting first after winning the toss, CSK posted a fighting 180 for 7 with Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube contributing some late runs. Batting first at Chepauk under lights, SRH had set a formidable target which merits it with six balls to spare thanks to Ishan Kishan’s brilliant knock of 707 off 47 and Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26) scorching cameo. Hope you all enjoyed today as well, in the end SRH 5-wicket win moved them again closer for playoffs spot in IPL 2026 while CSK campaign on a see-saw now!!!

This game meant something beyond the numbers; it was a playoff game, in truth. Sunrisers Hyderabad came in, knowing that a victory would virtually secure their place in the top four, along with Gujarat Titans, while Chennai Super Kings needed a win just to keep their season alive. MS Dhoni arrived at the ground for his first appearance in IPL 2026 but could not play due to a calf injury, so Ruturaj Gaikwad continued as captain. That subplot lent some extra emotional heft to what was billed as a de facto knockout game for the hosts.

Samson and Gaikwad got off to a flying start as they added 31 for the first wicket in less than four overs. Of the two, Samson adopted a more belligerent mindset, clearing his front leg to go hard against anything short or full while Gaikwad was the quieter lay person playing the ball into gaps and picking up boundaries once in a while.

Having fed Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma quick runs early in the powerplay, Pat Cummins then came back to peg CSK back in the middle overs, with cutters and slower balls doing damage on a surface that was gripping more than previously expected under lights.

CSK had slipped to 91 for 4 at one point, and with Gaikwad also struggling for fluency he scored just 9 off his first 11 balls in the powerplay, one of the slowest starts by any top-order batter in IPL 2026 things looked like they were going to stall completely. It was then that the record fifty-run partnership for CSK in IPL between Brevis and Dube off a scant 32 deliveries built on Brevis’s knack to create pace off spin and seam both reignited the contest.

Brevis, who took a knee before walking out to bat as he always does, hit Nitish Kumar Reddy for a four and a six in the 14th over to quickly show his intent, then just kept finding the boundary with cross-batted pulls and cuts. A few cameos from the death pair, three off the last ball Hosein faced, in fact pushed it over 180 and gave their bowlers something to defend on a used Chepauk surface.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Innings — 181/5 (19 overs)

Chasing 181, SRH lost an early wicket but were carried home by a match-winning stand between Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.

Did not bat: R Smaran, Pat Cummins (c), Shivang Kumar, Eshan Malinga, Praful Hinge

Fall of wickets: 1-18 (Head), 2-83 (Abhishek Sharma), 3-165 (Kishan), 4-172 (Klaasen), 5-178 (Reddy)

Travis Head, brought in as SRH’s Impact Player substitute in place of Sakib Hussain, fell early after mistiming a pull straight to Sanju Samson, but Abhishek Sharma kept the scoring ticking over in the powerplay, using his feet against the spinners and picking the gaps against the pace bowlers. SRH crossed 50 inside seven overs, with Abhishek and Kishan both looking set, and the required rate never threatened to run away from the visitors.

It was the middle overs where the chase was really settled, where Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen put together a quick stand that robbed CSK of their spin options almost entirely and took the game away from them. Kishan, who has been one of the most reliable finishers for SRH through IPL 2026, began cautiously but accelerated once Klaasen was out next to him at the crease. The small square boundaries at Chepauk suited Klaasen, as he kept picking off strokeful boundaries regularly, reducing the required rate with every over.

However, even after both fell in reasonably quick succession with Kishan holing out for a good chunk and Klaasen mistiming one into the hands of Shivam Dube Nitish Kumar Reddy’s brisk cameo followed by a measured, unbroken finish from Salil Arora made sure there was no tension at all late on. SRH eventually crossed the line with six balls to spare, confirming victory that had seemed a mere matter of time since the Kishan-Klaasen pairing began.

Of the CSK attack, Mukesh Choudhary was the pick with 2 wickets coming as an Impact Player for CSK, striking twice in the last phase to remove Nitish Kumar Reddy and add another late wicket. Travis Head was the first to go, courtesy of Spencer Johnson while Noor Ahmad also chipped in during the middle overs. But it was Anshul Kamboj, who came to the cash register with miles more than any other fast bowler at the death: after having settled in, Kishan and Klaasen took on the CSK speed attack, hitting boundaries at will from over 16 to 18.

Once Kishan and Klaasen took control of the chase there just wasn’t enough in reserve in CSK’s attack, indeed not having a really over-the-top option at death was evident towards the end.

Standout bowler was Pat Cummins (3 for 28); took his slower-ball variations to good use on slow Chepauk surface, key wickets of Sanju Samson and Kartik Sharma. Against CSK’s in-form top order, he executed the same set-up before switching pace extremely well to claim both wickets or dismissals. M Möller had useful support from Sakib Hussain (2 for 34), who used his ability to take pace off the ball throughout his impressive spell to keep the CSK middle order in check, before Eshan Malinga struck at a critical time to remove Dewald Brevis just as further acceleration appeared possible.

While Shivang Kumar and Praful Hinge went wicketless, they at least stemmed the flow of runs during their spell with a tight line to keep CSK from really taking off in the final few overs, leaving the hosts stranded on what was ultimately a below-par total given their mid-innings foundation.

Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad Match Summary

Toss: CSK elected to bat first (Pitch for a wear, so it kept going getting great marks). Samson and Gaikwad gave them a great start, dashing to 31 in less than four overs but Pat Cummins turned the innings on its head taking three wickets in the middle overs, dismissing Samson, Kartik Sharma and Gaikwad.

After a mini-collapse, where CSK went from 91 for 4 to the 140s with Brevis and Dube putting on a 50-run stand in just 32 balls before pushing them to what turned out to be defendable total of 180 for the loss of seven wickets thanks to cameos from Veer and Hosein.

In the second innings: SRH got few runs to play with as they lost Travis Head early inside the powerplay however Abhishek Sharma was doing just enough in terms of scoring runs. The real pivot in the match came when Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen put on runs at better than 11 an over and ironically taking the equation away from CSK. They both fell in the space of four deliveries but a cameos from Nitish Kumar Reddy and an even more composed finish from Salil Arora ensured that SRH crossed the line with six balls to spare.

The turning points: The two crucial game-changing events that defined this match were Pat Cummins’s triple in the CSK innings and the Kishan-Klaasen stand in the chase. While CSK’s middle-order trio of Brevis and Dube put together a decent target, SRH’s lower order power hit the right chord for them.

Partnership of the match: The 50-run stand between Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube (32 balls) for CSK, and match-defining stand between Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen (45 in 2nd wkt), were the two most influential partnerships of the game.

Result: SRH wins by 5 wickets (SRH chased down 181 in 19 overs)

IPL play off standings: The victory took Sunrisers Hyderabad’s tally to 16 points from 13 matches, which almost guaranteed their place in the top four along with Gujarat Titans, who had already qualified. The defeat compounded what has been a horrible run of results for Chennai Super Kings, leaving them needing a series of improbable results to go their way in their remaining matches if they are to have any realistic chance of edging into the playoffs.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, when asked about his own future with the franchise post-achievement, replied how whether or not he continued depended on the team management and not himself, a response illustrating just how prickly and fidgety things around the camp had become.

Pitch and conditions: Surprisingly for a night game, the Chepauk surface played slower than what we have come to expect, nonetheless there were signs of turn and some uneven bounce as the match wore on which was why both teams turned to their spinners and slower-ball options through the middle overs. Chasing was easier though on the night as dew in the second innings made it a lot easier for SRH batters to find their timing once real moisture soaked into the ball.

This latest result in Chennai continues that recent upswing for the Orange Army, even though CSK still hold a commanding overall lead in the fixture. Note: different trackers list slightly varying head-to-head counts due to inconsistent match-numbering across seasons — the figures above reflect the most widely corroborated tally heading into this game.

CSK vs SRH Match Highlights

Key batting performances: Sanju Samson 27 (13 balls) – seemed to put CSK’s innings in cruise control, Dewald Brevis (44) kept CSK afloat after the middle order collapse From the SRH perspective, their top-scoring efforts came from Ishan Kishan (70 off 47) and Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26).

Key Wickets: When SRH were batting, Pat Cummins dismissed Sanju Samson in the very first over before picking up Kartik Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad to end just at the right time, and shifted momentum towards SRH. Mukesh Choudhary claimed the wicket of Nitish Kumar Reddy in the hurry but it was way too little, too late for CSK.

Key partnerships: Brevis-Dube for CSK and Kishan-Klaasen for SRH

The partnership between Kishan and Klaasen – who scored runs at a rapid pace during the middle overs – is considered as the turning point of the match with SRH’s chase getting into full swing then.

Last few overs: Bayliss’s men wrapped up comfortably the chase in the 19th over, with six balls to spare and made themselves bereft of any doubts on reaching into the IPL 2026 playoffs. A first-ball boundary from Nitish Kumar Reddy a sliced ball over extra cover, followed by a wristy flick to the fine-leg wall took the equation into single digits before Salil Arora struck with impressive calmness in an unbeaten knock that kept CSK away from late intrigue even after Noor Ahmad pulled off a sensational piece of fielding that controversially saved five match-defining runs at the rope.

Player reactions: Player of the Match Ishan Kishan credited the tricky nature of the surface for making his innings especially challenging, noting that the spinners and slower balls were difficult to get away early on and that he had to focus on batting deep into the innings. Pat Cummins, reflecting on his own performance and the win, called the pitch a tough one to bat on and praised the Kishan-Klaasen partnership for choosing their match-ups smartly and playing what he described as some remarkable shots under pressure.

CSK vs SRH Records

Highest Individual Score: The highest individual score in the CSK vs SRH rivalry is an unbeaten 117 off just 57 deliveries scored by Shane Watson during the IPL Final (2018). Ishan Kishan’s 70 was the individual bright spot in this game.

Team Records: 223/3 by CSK in 2013 is the highest either side has gotten against the other and SRH’s chase of 181 in this match continues their recent run of strong performances between these two most renewed rivals recently.

Partnerships: The stand worth of 82 run between Kishan & Klaasen was the principal partnership in this Match but well below the biggest stands in overall history of rivalry.

Bowling records: Dwayne Bravo’s 20 wickets is the most by any bowler in CSK vs SRH rivalry. While Pat Cummins’s return of 3 for 28 was the best of the day, he has moved into fairly rare territory against this top order: few have been able to get more mileage out of such little change in action and speed in recent weeks with multiple CSK bats looking at least a little troubled by his trajectory today.

Venue records at Chepauk: MA Chidambaram Stadium has increasingly favoured chasing teams in IPL 2026, with the toss-winning captain often opting to field first given the dew factor under lights. This match followed a slightly different pattern, with CSK choosing to bat first, but the result a comfortable chase fit the broader trend seen at the venue through the season, where teams batting second have had the upper hand in a majority of matches played there this year.

Conclusion

This CSK vs SRH clash lived up to its billing as a virtual playoff eliminator, with Chennai Super Kings posting a fighting 180 for 7 before Sunrisers Hyderabad chased it down with five wickets and six balls to spare. Ishan Kishan’s brilliant 70 and his partnership with Heinrich Klaasen proved to be the difference, while Pat Cummins’s 3 for 28 ensured SRH always had control of the game.

The result confirmed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s place in the IPL 2026 playoffs and left Chennai Super Kings’ own campaign hanging by the slimmest of threads. For the complete breakdown of every run, wicket, and partnership, refer to the full CSK vs SRH scorecard and match statistics above.
