West Indies vs India 1st T20I: Match Highlights
West Indies won the toss? No, India won the toss and chose to field first, a decision that would eventually pay dividends. The West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals as they were all out for 171 in 19.1 overs.
With the bat, it was mainly Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford who were the lone fighters. Hope hit a run-a-ball 52, and Rutherford blasted an explosive 56 from just 34 deliveries. After an early wobble, the partnership helped push West Indies into a competitive position, but they consistently lost ground as India’s bowlers kept applying pressure late on in the innings.
India got off to a brilliant start with the ball, reducing West Indies 44/3 in powerplay. It was the wicket from Arshdeep Singh that gave India their first break, while a few runouts helped too by the Indian fielders. One of them was Naman Dhir on his T20I debut. He finished with figures of 3 for 31 and bagged the prized wicket of Shai Hope. India ended the innings with West Indies all out for 171 as Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav also took two wickets each.

Shreyas Iyer Produces a Stunning Century
India’s chase started off in an imperfect fashion. Abhishek Sharma scored 21 off just 10 balls before getting out, with Sanju Samson scoring only 11. West Indies had a real chance to get on top as India fell to 35/2 in the fifth over.
But then came the move of Shreyas Iyer, who turned the tide of the game. The Indian skipper combined with Ishan Kishan and started rebuilding the innings. In response, the duo attacked the West Indies bowling at a rapid pace. Thus, Iyer had accelerated after notching up his half-century and eventually achieved a maiden T20I hundred. Iyer remained not out on 102 off 43 balls, hitting 10 fours and six maximums. His innings was, however, all the more impressive considering India had two wickets down for no runs on the board.
Ishan Kishan supported him well in the chase and stayed not out as India chased down 172/2 in only 14.4 overs. Their unbroken partnership could have added to that, finishing at 137, and ended the contest long before it reached its concluding overs.

Naman Dhir Impresses on T20I Debut
While Shreyas Iyer’s century grabbed most of the attention, Naman Dhir also enjoyed a memorable debut for India.
The all-rounder delivered an important spell when West Indies were attempting to build momentum. His three wickets prevented the visitors from finishing with a much bigger total. His dismissal of Shai Hope was particularly important because the West Indies captain had established himself at the crease.
Dhir eventually finished with figures of 3/31, while Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav contributed two wickets each. India’s bowling attack therefore managed to contain West Indies despite the useful half-centuries from Hope and Rutherford.
India Take 1-0 Lead in Five-Match T20I Series
The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. It also extends India’s impressive run in the format, with the ICC reporting that the team has now won 10 consecutive T20Is.
West Indies will now need to regroup before the second match. Their batting showed signs of competitiveness, but losing wickets during the powerplay and failing to contain Iyer’s counterattack ultimately proved decisive.
The second T20I will be played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on October 9, 2026. The remaining matches are scheduled for Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

India will be delighted with the performances of Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir, while the team will also take confidence from the successful chase despite losing two early wickets. For West Indies, Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford provided positives with the bat, but the team will need greater consistency from its top order and bowlers.
