Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig Tactical Comparison
Real Madrid’s attacking approach
In many matches this season Real Madrid has seemed to be a real threat when they are able to use a combination of patient possession and rapid transition from defense to attack. They have some of the most technically gifted midfielders who are capable of controlling the pace of play. Additionally, there are forwards on the team like Vinicius Junior who can find spaces behind the opposition’s defensive line.
In addition to their strong record in two leg European ties, Madrid have the ability to adjust to the current score line and make sure that they are focused upon the crucial times during a game. Madrid does not have to be dominant in every aspect of a game, but rather can use their adaptability to gain an edge.
RB Leipzig’s pressing and counterattacking style
RB Leipzig is recognized for its intense pressure, swift transition into attack, and attempt to regain control of the ball near the opponent’s goal line. This style of play has the potential to disturb teams that would typically begin an attack with a slow build-up from their own defensive area.
Their 3-2 win in October 2022 was an example of how successful their high-intensity attack can be. However, pressing takes more than just being aggressive. When the opposition passes through the initial press, space develops in front of the back four (midfield) and behind the back four (defensive line).
The midfield battle
Whether Leipzig will be able to apply aggressive pressure depends on how well they control the midfield, or if they have to stay in a much tighter formation. Real Madrid’s ability to maintain possession of the ball and pass it around when under pressure can allow them to open up space.
Leipzig benefits when they force turnovers and get the ball downfield as fast as possible so the other team does not have time to set up again.
Defensive strengths and weaknesses
The knockout stage of the 2024 competition was an opportunity for Madrid to use its experience and ability to defend a lead. Although Leipzig put up some strong fights in terms of competition, they were unable to overcome the overall aggregate score of Madrid.
Leipzig’s major issue has been scoring enough goals off their attacks while not giving Madrid opportunities to use space when they transition.
Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig Stadium and Venue History
The teams have played at two distinctive venues: the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.

An added benefit for Madrid is the comfort level that comes from playing at home. This can be especially true in key Champions League knock-out games.
Red Bull Arena Leipzig
Red Bull Arena is where RB Leipzig plays its home games. On October 22nd, 2022, RB Leipzig earned its first win against Madrid at Red Bull Arena with a score of 3-2. In addition, RB Leipzig hosted the opening game for the Round of 16 in the 2024 season. RB Leipzig lost that game 1-0 even though they had numerous chances to score.
Home-court advantage may make a difference, however, it does not ensure a win. Both teams have shown that they are able to play at their best outside of their home arena during this matchup.
